"He wrote that "If a race has no history, it has no worthwhile tradition, it becomes a negligible factor in the thought of the world, and it stands in danger of being exterminated" (21).
It's basically saying that in the eyes of the world, if a race has no history then it doesn't have something interesting to remember it for. To fight to persevere a race is heartbreaking as it is part of someone's identity and they shouldn't have to fight keep it remembered.
"His pieces helped me think about how I could bring tenderness to my work and that I didn't have to divorce myself from my own identity" (32).
It is insane that through looking through GonZalez-Torres's work she realized that she didn't need to separate her identity from her work. She shouldn't have even felt the need to sacrifice who she is as a person regarding her work in the first place.
