This is What I Know About Art by Kimberly Drew

"For so many young people of color, we feel like we don't have the luxury of exploring the liberal arts--society tells us that we have to take coursework to become high earners to make valuable contributions to the world"

This still weighs done on so many people of color today. Whether it's society that's tells us or family. Pursuing your own interests, especially if they may not pay well in the future, is looked at as failing in the eyes of others who put aside the things they were passionate about to listen to their families/society so they can be contributing members of society. For those that can afford to explore, it's considered being cultured or something to do for fun. But for those that bet everything on pursuing a career on anything that's not nursing, becoming a doctor, lawyer, or other high paying jobs. It's considered "failing."

"On the other hand, my mother had lived for more than two decades without a visit to a museum, and it seemingly had little impact on her life."

It sounds like a shock to most people when a person you've known for so long say they've never experienced something. But when you think about it there are probably way more people out in the world who've also went their whole lives without seeing a museum. It could be due to location, time, and interest.
