This is what I know about art
“for so many young people of color, we feel like we don’t
have the luxury of exploring liberal arts and-society tells us we have to take
coursework to become high earners to make valuable contributions to the world.”
Pg 14
For many people of color, we feel as though we have to take
the coursework to be successful. Times are changing and we are being exposed to
a lot but for so long poc college students were always made to believe by
society/parents that we’d have to become lawyers, doctors, engineers etc. to
make something of our lives. The pressure was at an all-time high and still
somewhat is till this day.
“There was a moment of respite whenever I encountered a work
that mirrored feelings that felt too complicated to define on my own.” Pg 48
This quote is following the incident that happened regarding
the death of Michael brown. She goes on to explain how often when going through
something or sorting out feelings that can’t be explained or put into words,
the best way is to find relief in artwork that mirrors those emotions. Sometimes
there are feelings that are too big to understand no matter how hard we try and
the only way for us to see it clearly is to listen, read, watch, see things
that resembles our feelings.
