"In creative fields, when it comes to lack of diversity, many blame 'the pipeline.' They claim that a lack of applicants inhibits them from making more inclusive hiring decisions. I refuse to believe that, and I want you to know that I see you and thank you. I have seen many rooms that need people just like you. Please never hesitate to begin your own journey into the arts. From the outside, you may see the same names inscribed as I did when I looked at the Met's facade. They may intimidate you, too. I hope you also know that if we're ever going to add to the list of names that are celebrated in history, we'll be stronger together." (Drew, p. 60-61)
This quote by Kimberly Drew is a powerful reminder of the importance of diversity in the creative fields. Drew challenges the notion that a lack of diversity is due to a lack of qualified applicants and encourages underrepresented individuals to pursue their own journey in the arts. She acknowledges the intimidating nature of the industry, but emphasizes the need for collective action and inclusivity in order to broaden the scope of celebrated names in art history. Drew's words are a call to action for greater representation and equity in the arts, and a reminder that diverse voices and perspectives are essential to a vibrant and dynamic creative community.
"Activism is a collective action and an investment in the lives of other people." (Drew, p. 61)
Drew's words serve as a reminder that activism is not just about individual efforts, but rather a collaborative effort to create a more just and equitable world for all.
For spring break, I stayed at home, studying and getting ahead on LinkedIn. My sister forced me to go to the American Museum of Natural History in NYC with my beautiful Bio-major friends for fun.
