For my second intervention, I chose to continue with my first project in which I tackled the issue of generational trauma. I decided to do an interview-based video in which I asked questions that discussed the cause and effect of said issue. While I originally wanted to include many more people in this interview, I changed my mind and decided to go with just the one for now and leave the other ideas in my back pocket for the final.
The entire reason I chose this social issue for my semester intervention, is because I feel that it’s a huge issue that impacts a vast majority of us. I also chose it because I’m extremely interested in the whole nature vs. nurture theory. I also think it’s important to verbalize these types of things because often people may feel pressure to ignore the bad part of their childhood merely because their parents were good to them sometimes. Every case is different, and some are more complicated than others but nonetheless every case is important and should be verbalized more. Additionally, I wanted to touch upon accountability within us as victims as well. Meaning that, our trauma can be worked on and we don’t have to continue the cycle if we put the work into our self-growth.
Lastly, in the book The Art of Activism, pg. 129 reads “knowing our history is the first step in taking control of our destiny.” I felt like this quote was spot on for my intervention because, going back to the topic of accountability as victims, we should work to stop the cycle. I feel that acknowledging your pain, and going through your feelings, is the best way to bring the generational trauma to a stop.
