Chapter 5
“You must be the change you wish to see in the world” (171).
How can you strive to make a better world if you don’t take the first step in acting how that change should be? You make be the example for what you strive for.
"Information only makes sense when linked with other information” (175).
If you relate information to other similar information it can make it simpler to infer. People can understand the information that you are trying to present them with.
“If we really want to bring about revolutions in thinking and being we need to disrupt the stories people already have and help to write new ones” (194).
If we want to bring about a change we need to stop the stories that caused people to think in the way that we are protesting against. New stories need to be created that follow this change.
Chapter 6
“Activists too share a general aim with marketers; to influence human behavior in order to have a demonstrable impact” (213).
The two do share the similarity of wanting to influence a specific behavior in humans. However, one wants to change how people feel and act and the other wants people to spend.
"Trying to reach everyone is neither an efficient use of resources and nor would it be effective” (235).
You have to resonate with a small group of people one by one. If you try to do it all at once you will find yourself stretched thin and unable to make the impact that you want.
"Instead of dismissing people's decisions as ignorant or nonsensical, we can learn to make sense of the thinking behind them" (241).
If you want someone to change their behavior you must first understand why they act the way that they do. Only then can you strive to make them change for a better world.
