Quotes from Chapter 5 & 6

CHAPTER 5:

"Information only makes sense when linked with other information. In order to recall, understand, or use ideas, we need to be able to attach them to other ideas." p.157

That quote is VERY spot on. As humans, we need to be able to connect the dots between different pieces of information in order to truly comprehend and make use of it. It's like building a puzzle; each piece is important, but it's only when we put them together that we can see the bigger picture. 


"But with a basic knowledge of how human minds and brains work, we can take another approach, one that actually works. Because it’s not that people can’t change their political minds, it’s just that this is hard to do, and exposure to facts alone won’t do it. We need to change what people do with the facts we give them." p.186

I find this entire part of the chapter interesting, and I completely agree with it. Changing someone's political beliefs can be a difficult task, but it's not impossible. Rather than simply bombarding people with facts, we need to find new ways to engage with them and help them think critically about the information they're receiving. By understanding how our minds and brains work, we can develop strategies to present information in a way that is more likely to be accepted and understood. It's not an easy task, but with the right approach, we can encourage people to think more deeply about their political beliefs and be more open to change.


"By telling stories people are open to hearing, and understanding how we can fit our concerns into stories people already tell themselves, we can get them to listen to what we have to say and look at what we want to show them." p.194

It's so true that stories have a way of capturing people's attention and making them more open to new ideas. By finding ways to connect our concerns and messages to stories that people are already familiar with, we can create a deeper level of understanding and engagement. It's all about finding common ground and using that as a foundation for meaningful conversation.



CHAPTER 6:

"People have options, and our job is to persuade them that ours is the best." p.219

In a world with so many options and choices, it's important to persuade people that our option is the best one. To do this, we need to clearly communicate the benefits of what we're offering and why it's the right choice for them. It's not about forcing people to choose our option, but rather about convincing them that it's the best fit for their needs and values. Such brilliant advice for an activism project.


"A broader message may reach more people, but with less depth and resonance than if we targeted a small group. On the other hand, a narrow audience means a more directed and effective message, but sacrifices efficiency. The art is finding the æffective equilibrium; impacting a targeted group through individualized appeals, while reaching the maximum number of people necessary to have a significant effect." p. 238

It's important to find that balance between reaching a large audience and creating a message that really resonates with people. When we target a specific group, we can create a more personalized message that speaks directly to their needs and concerns. However, we also need to ensure that our message reaches enough people to have a significant impact.


"Try and understand why people think what they think and do what they do, and then use this to build a better world together." p.240

This quote was highlighted in the chapter, and is something I would use not only in my art in the future but also in my daily life. I believe it's very crucial to take the time to understand where people are coming from and what motivates their thoughts and actions. By doing so, we can find similarities within our values but different approaches and work together to create a better world. We need to listen to each other with an open mind and heart, even when we disagree, and strive to find solutions that benefit everyone.
