Intervention II

"Sometimes the best way to bring the world we want into being is to act "as if" it is already" (102). Activism isn't always loud and disruptive (although it's necessary sometimes); sometimes, it's choosing to live in the way the world ought to be than what it currently is. For example, Claudette Colvin. She was a 15 years old African American student that decided she wasn't going to sit in the back of the bus but in the front in the "whites only" section.

For my intervention project, I'll be doing a reporter-on-the-street type of interview with strangers (with their consent, of course) and asking them how much they think it costs to raise a child. How much does education cost for one child? Then I'd ask them, "What if I told you in some parts of the world, you could raise a child for $50 a month?" see their reactions and introduce them to zakat.org.

As we're in the month of Ramadan, Muslims must donate 2.5% of their income. There's no restriction on who they can contribute to or the cause. It's normal for people to donate to end a famen in a struggling country or victims of war. At Zakat.org, you can donate $50 a month to aid one orphan for shelter, education, food, and other life necessities. These charities are verified, and 100% of the proceeds go to the cause; I personally make it a responsibility to vet the charities before I speak about them.

Now the intention of this project is to make people realize it's not hard to aid victims of foreign crises. If one isn't able to donate, then spreading the word or sharing a link goes a long way. "What's also needed are new models for how things might be" (94).

While asking questions, I'd have a flyer posted behind me with the QR code to the organization. What I love is you can choose the country where you'd want to support an orphan or select the "country in most need." Every month you'd get an update on the child you're supporting.

"The mark of a good leader is to train others to lead, give them the tools to succeed on their own, and then get off the way" (96). Once you teach someone something new, they're amazed they start telling others. Hopefully, through this, I'll create an ongoing chain of people wanting to do good for the Orphans affected by wars.
