My second intervention project is a video showing the effects of patriarchy through a story from one of our old readings visualized by silhouettes and me narrating. The story is taken from Bell Hook's book "The Will to Change" where in Chapter 2 she recollects about the her childhood at age 5 and how differently her Dad perceived their family compared to her. She understood now that his way of seeing how his family should behave was influenced by growing up in a patriarchy society, though back then she couldn't have. At some point she attempts to play with the marbles and her father is displeased because playing with marbles to him isn't something a girl should be doing and tells her to stop. After defying him and continuing to play with the marbles, he then proceeded to snatch her, beat her with a plank and tell her how "You're just a little girl. When I tell you to do something, I mean for you to do it."
The reason I decided to make a video visualizing this story is because it stuck with me after reading it and gave me more insight on the way patriarchy has affected a lot of peoples way of thinking. Patriarchy not is only one sided even, after the story she explains how her mother came to soothe the pain and tell her "I tried to warn you. You need to accept that you are just a little girl and girls can't do what boys do." Its crazy how the patriarchy mindset has spread so much that more people growing up are then put in a position where they accept that as their default way of thinking.
My hope for this intervention to have more people be aware of how the way patriarchy has effected peoples minds, causing them to not think rationally and at worst commit horrendous acts.
