Daniel Lau, Intervention 3

Daniel Lau                                     Intervention 3: Drag Queen (part 2)

Drag queens are individuals, usually males, who dress in flamboyant and often exaggerated feminine costumes and makeup as a form of entertainment or artistic expression. Drag queens have been a part of society for decades and have recently gained more mainstream attention and acceptance. However, despite increasing acceptance, drag queens still face several problems. These problems include discrimination, violence, limited job opportunities, and stereotyping, to name a few. These issues can impact their mental and physical health and create significant challenges in their personal and professional lives.

Despite these challenges, drag queens have made several positive impacts on society. Their art, performances, and activism have raised awareness about LGBTQ+ issues, helped break down gender norms, and fostered a culture of community and inclusivity. Drag queens provide a platform for LGBTQ+ individuals to express themselves and show the world their talent and creativity. Many drag queens also use their platforms to advocate for social justice issues and raise funds for charitable causes. They work towards creating a world where everyone, regardless of their gender or sexual identity, can embrace their authentic selves and live openly and happily. In conclusion, while drag queens have faced and continue to face challenges, they have made significant positive impacts on society. Their unique brand of art and advocacy has helped to create a more inclusive, accepting, and diverse world.

I strongly believe in diversity, which is why I wanted to expand this project by being creative again and sending a different message to the audience. That despite the odds, we can still make positive impacts on society. Help people, including the younger generation to come out of their shells and be free to express themselves. With my intervention, I'm going to make a video that represents drag queens, but more positive and delivering a different message. I would take into consideration changing my clothings and filming someplace bigger. My story would be about Daniella who's going through a healing transition after breaking up with her boyfriend Chris. This concept gives a nice connection to my topic since it represents of being strong and having control of our own identities. Don't let someone like Chris make you feel insecure or badly influenced by their judgments and actions, because in reality you're beautiful and free to express yourself however you want with your own identity.

There are artists out there that also respect and support drag queens. "Drag is about expression and creation, not a competition between genders. It's an art form and it's beautiful." - Lady Gaga. "Drag queens are the ultimate expression of freedom and nonconformity. They challenge traditional ideas of gender and beauty and push us all to be more accepting and open-minded." - Andy Warhol. "I believe in the transformative power of drag. It allows us to step outside of ourselves and explore different sides of our personalities." - David Bowie.  "Drag queens are an important part of our culture and history. They have been trailblazers and pioneers, fighting for acceptance and equality for all." - Madonna. Reading their quotes gives me the fact that even other famous celebrities that are not drags can help by using their platforms to stop the hatred and unfair discrimination towards drag queens.

In the book of  The Art of Activism, there are some quotes that I found inspirational. In page 132,  it says “CULTURE IS ALL AROUND US. It’s the system of meanings that allows us to understand our world and to communicate this understanding to others.” This quote is inspirational to me since I’m aware that the drag culture is still a misconception to some people, which is why we need to communicate with them so that they understand what the drag culture really is. In page 133, it says “But there’s another way of understanding culture, a definition that is broader and more inclusive.” I found this quote inspiring since drag queens are fighting and sending out a message that’s about inclusivity, acceptance and diversity. Lastly, on page 207, it says “In order to reach people where they are and show them another world is possible, we must appeal to their emotions and their intellect. Reading this quote is thoughtful to me since it makes me think about the Drag Queen Story Hour, the idea to help children to read books and help them to be free to express themselves is inspiring. Unfortunately there are other people that is against this and believe it’s inappropriate to children, are they for real?
