Chapter 5
"But facts are not enough. No matter how many pamphlets you distribute at information tables, or how informative your artwork is, nothing is going to happen unless people can make sense of the facts you are giving them." page 174
This section of chapter five made the most sense to me especially because it talks about how giving out information isn't enough. Random facts without any context or motivations it's hard for people to see a reason to go out an act. They can barely make sense of the information they have, which is something I have personally experienced with those "information tables"
"We need to recognize that people are full of contradictory ideas, then bypass the ideas and associations that run counter to our objective. Then we can focus in on and work with the ones that can help us." Page 193
I feel like a lot of people will point out these contraditories and this will demotivate people from wanting to participate in a cause. I feel like it's better to give a person a reason as to why they should fight for something as opposed to breaking down there characters.
"Our emotions, thoughts, and actions are deeply interconnected, so we must know how to people think, as well as how they feel." page 171
In order to connect with people we must understand them. We have to be able to make connections that are meaningful enough to get our point across. In order to change a person's point of view you have to connect with their feelings.
Chapter 6
"Ideas and awareness are important. That's how people change their minds and then take action. One requires the other, and getting people to think and talk about an issue is absolutely critical. But if it stops there, and stays at the level of changes consciousness, then nothing is ever going to change. " Page 214
Putting out ideas and awareness about a certain issue can only really do so much, like in chapter 5 they mentioned that facts are just facts if people can't make associations with the topic. Once a person fully understands the topic there is still so much more to be done to motivate. You have now made a connection with these facts that people understand and they start talking about it to others but if it doesn't go past that talking stage the change won't ever happen.
"Ultimately, as artistic activists, were making a persuasive case: emphasizing the benefits and minimizing the costs of new behavior, while playing down the benefits and highlighting the costs of old behavior." page 224
Viewing activism as a persuasive case makes it a lot easier to understand the best way to go about getting someone attention for our case. Explaining in terms a person most likely knows, like this has X benefits and what you're doing now is costing you Y, helps sell your pitch even more.
"Trying to reach everyone is neither an efficient use of resources and nor would it be effective." page 235
I think a lot of the times everyone feels like the goal is to get everyone to hear them out, it can be disheartening and discouraging when we get shushed away continuously. It is important to know that the goal isn't to reach everyone but to connect with someone, it's near impossible for everyone to all agree.
