Before I share, I had the audible book but not the physical book; thus, I can't share exact citations or complete quotes.
"White guilt is just as rude as white supremacy." She shares this after her art professor shares a video about slavery, and her white classmates respond with their guilt for being white. While she's angry about their validation from the professor on their guilt she complains to Twitter. This quote stuck with me because it's often taught that white guilt is okay, and thus that person can't be racist or have any internal bias again people of color, which isn't true. As someone that's had the privilege of traveling, I can verify that the white tears that are shed in guilt are enough for someone to validate themselves in believing they can't be racist.
"It's absurd to think about how many internships are still unpaid, and how elitist and morally corrupt it is.." This is the unfortunate reality of gaining experience while still having bills to pay (as everyone in America does). You need experience for the job you want, but you can't get it unless you do it for free. Thus, you must do that internship while working two jobs to cover rent and other bills while being in school full-time. Living shouldn't be this hard. Unfortunately, living in a hyper-capitalist country with very few labor laws for companies, this is the reality. From what I've seen, this is starting to change, aside from government, every internship I see is paid, just not paying their interns a lot. A good loophole from what I've seen is offering to "grow your skills" for a company you want to work in, and after you're doing an excellent job for a month or so, ask if there's any flexibility to continue working there under a paid part-time contract.
As for spring break, I took a spontaneous trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico. The best-unplanned trip ever! Enjoy this picture of me getting ready to go out for dinner!
