"This is What I Know About Art" by Kimberly Drew - Quotes

"The discussion began with anger and discomfort, and then a chorus of white guilt and tears erupted. Some students were upset by the artists' intention, and others were ashamed of the history that the piece highlighted. I, on the other hand, felt solidarity with the artists' need to highlight the shameful history of the world's fair and how, more often than not, people of color are brought into art spaces to perform for white audiences." pgs. 25-26

In this quote, Drew recalls an experience in her Art History class and her classmates reaction to the artwork of Coco Fusco called The Couple in the Cage. I felt extremely close to this quote because as a Black woman who grew up in predominately white spaces, I have often be placed in this situation. It can be extremely disheartening when white white people are so blinded by their "guilt" that they do even understand the message that the piece is trying to send. White students are privileged enough to not have to come to terms with such horrific realities that POC have to endure their entire lives.

"Being Black in America is frequently measured against the proximity of death..." pg. 46

This quote really struck me because I had been doing this and hadn't even really realized it. There are also discussions on the Black spaces in social media that say things like "where were you when this tragic event happened?" The amount of people who vividly remembered where they were and how they felt is extremely chilling because you realize how much this effect an entire community of people, spanning generations.

My spring break consisted of rehearsal for the schools musical A Chorus Line, which is opening this weekend March 17-19 and March 24-26! These are pictures of my friends and of me! I love my Canon camera, I use it to vlog, but this day I learned how to open the flash.
