Intervention 1: Reject Hostile Architecture

For my group's intervention, we decided to create a flyer/sign and placed it on campus to raise awareness about hostile architecture. As I mentioned in my previous blog post, this type of architecture often gets overlooked since its intentions are not immediately obvious. In the Art of Activism there is a quote that states, "Art allows us to say things that can't be said, to give form to abstract feelings and ideas and present them in such ways that they can be communicated with others." Duncambe, & Lambert, p.25. I want our flyer to make the intentions of hostile architecture obvious and prove that they are detrimental. When someone looks at a park bench with an "arm rest" in the middle, they think it's just for comfort. But really, it's so that someone doesn't sleep on it. I think it's a massive issue that impacts people struggling with homelessness and this group of people is often ignored and left to fend for themselves. With this project, we intend to not only raise awareness on this issue but to also inspire others to find ways to combat this issue and speak up. There is a quote in the Art of Activism that reminded us of our process of working on the design. It states, "The creative process is something that every artist develops and masters over the course of many years, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach." Duncambe, & Lambert, The Art of Activism, p.51. Since this is our first time creating our own piece of art activism, we were admittedly a little hard on ourselves as we found it difficult to work on the design aspect in photoshop, but I do believe we created something close enough to what we imagined. Although, this is something we want to continue to develop over the next few projects and eventually work our way up to a wearable piece.
